# OpenAirDocs > OpenAirDocs is an open copy of U.S. aviation data from the FAA: airworthiness directives (ADs) with their full text, proposed ADs, special airworthiness information bulletins (SAIBs), concern sheets, advisory circulars, type certificate data sheets, supplemental type certificates (STCs), the aircraft registry with every cancelled registration, service difficulty reports, and FAA accident and incident reports; and from the NTSB, every aviation investigation since 1962, with its probable cause and findings. It's public domain (CC0 1.0); this is release 2026-10-21. Every record has a page, and every page has a Markdown copy at the same address with .md added. Cite records by their page address (the patterns are under Records below). An aircraft's page gathers what is known about it: its registration, cancelled registrations, the ADs and SAIBs that may apply, and its NTSB investigations and FAA reports, for example https://openairdocs.org/aircraft/N333UM.md. To query the data, attach the release's DuckDB file over HTTPS. DuckDB 1.2 or later reads only the parts a query needs, so there's nothing to download first. Every table and column is described in the file: ```sql ATTACH 'https://openairdocs.org/data/latest/openair.duckdb' AS openair (READ_ONLY); USE openair; SELECT table_name, comment FROM duckdb_tables() WHERE database_name = 'openair'; SELECT column_name, data_type, comment FROM duckdb_columns() WHERE table_name = 'ntsb_case_detail'; ``` The file also has views for common questions (ntsb_pre1982_cause, ntsb_case, aircraft_history, geo_location; see Tables below), and openair_page, which gives each record table's page address with the SQL that builds it. Most rows carry a page_url to cite: ```sql -- Everything on one N-number, with the pages to cite SELECT record, event_date, summary, page_url FROM aircraft_history WHERE n_number = 'N222UM' ORDER BY event_date; -- Fatal NTSB investigations of Cessna 172S aircraft, with the probable cause SELECT c.ntsb_number, c.event_date_local, c.city, c.state, c.probable_cause, c.page_url FROM ntsb_aircrafts a JOIN ntsb_case c ON c.case_mkey = a.case_mkey WHERE a.aircraft_model_key = '172S' AND c.highest_injury = 'Fatal' ORDER BY c.event_date_local DESC; ``` ADs are matched to the 317,759 registered aircraft by their airframe and engine models; there are 20,326 ADs, from 1946 on. faa_directive.ad_id joins every faa_directive_* table, and the candidate tables faa_aircraft_model_directive and faa_engine_model_directive that match ADs to registry models. faa_aircraft_registration (and faa_aircraft_deregistration, where N-numbers repeat) point to faa_aircraft_model.code by aircraft_model_code and to faa_engine_model.code by engine_model_code. A model_key is the model in upper case with only letters, digits and + (PA-28-181 is PA28181); faa_aircraft_model, faa_engine_model and the product tables carry one. Each NTSB case is one row of ntsb_case_detail, keyed by mKey; every other ntsb_ table joins on case_mkey. ntsb_aircrafts, faa_incident_report and faa_service_difficulty_report carry n_number. Matches between records (an AD to an aircraft, an NTSB case to a registration) are candidates. Check each AD's applicability (serial numbers, part numbers, configuration) before saying it applies, and cite AD numbers. NTSB's eventDate is the UTC date from 1982 on, so an evening event shows the next day: use ntsb_case.event_date_local. Owner and operator names are spelled as each record reports them: compare upper(name). Only the Federal Register PDF on govinfo.gov is the official text of an AD. More recipes (ADs for an aircraft, NTSB cases near a point) and every table in a line: https://openairdocs.org/data/dictionary.md. ## Records A record's page shows the first rows of each long list. The whole list is at the record's address plus /aircraft, /ads, /saibs, /stcs, /models, /reports (difficulty reports), /ntsb (NTSB investigations) or /incidents (FAA reports), as HTML: for example https://openairdocs.org/model/beech-v35b/aircraft or https://openairdocs.org/ac/43.13-1/ads. - [Airworthiness directive (AD)](https://openairdocs.org/ad/2016-07-21.md): `/ad/`; a revision is /ad/83-08-01-R1. The AD's text by paragraph, status, dates, the models it names, what it supersedes, and the registered aircraft it may apply to. - [Registered aircraft](https://openairdocs.org/aircraft/N333UM.md): `/aircraft/`; registration, airframe and engine models, every AD and SAIB that may apply, and the mark's cancelled registrations, NTSB investigations and FAA reports. A mark not registered now lists the aircraft that carried it. - [Cancelled registration](https://openairdocs.org/deregistered/N2067V-1953-12-16.md): `/deregistered/-`; the aircraft, its owner when the registration ended, and whether it was exported. - [Aircraft model](https://openairdocs.org/model/beech-v35b.md): `/model/`; the registry's maker and model in lower case with hyphens. A registry model code (/model/1151548) redirects there; a model_key such as PA28181 does not. ADs and SAIBs that may apply, registered aircraft, STCs, difficulty and incident reports. - [Engine model](https://openairdocs.org/engine/lycoming-io-540-series.md): `/engine/`; like aircraft models, for the registry's engine models; a registry engine code redirects there. - [Type certificate data sheet (TCDS)](https://openairdocs.org/tcds/3A12.md): `/tcds/`; the models on the data sheet, the ADs that name them, registered aircraft and STCs approved under it. - [Supplemental type certificate (STC)](https://openairdocs.org/stc/SA01861SE.md): `/stc/`; holder, the models it covers, the certificate's text, and the ADs that cite it. - [Proposed AD](https://openairdocs.org/proposed/FAA-2026-11811.md): `/proposed/`; every notice in the docket, the comment deadline, and the AD it became. - [Special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB)](https://openairdocs.org/saib/2026-17.md): `/saib/`; advisory, not mandatory; the bulletin's text and the models it concerns. - [Airworthiness concern sheet](https://openairdocs.org/acs/AIR723-2026-08-S-2730-ACS.md): `/acs/`; the FAA's request for information before deciding whether an AD is needed. - [Advisory circular (AC)](https://openairdocs.org/ac/43.13-1.md): `/ac/`; the family's current version; an older version at its own number (/ac/43.13-1B). The text by page, and the ADs that cite it. - [JASC code](https://openairdocs.org/jasc/5700.md): `/jasc/`; a system code from service difficulty reports, with its reports. - [Service difficulty report](https://openairdocs.org/sdr/DALA2026101905743.md): `/sdr/`; a malfunction or defect reported by an operator or repair station. - [FAA accident or incident report](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20260921012649A.md): `/incident/`; accidents (numbers ending A) and incidents (ending I) both live here; event_type says which. The FAA's report and narrative, matched to the aircraft registry. - [NTSB investigation](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DCA09MA026.md): `/ntsb/`; the NTSB's case: probable cause, findings, analysis and factual narrative, sequence of events, aircraft (matched to the registry), crew, weather, its docket's files and the FAA reports on the same event. A number several pre-1982 cases share lists them, each at /ntsb/-; a case key (mKey) alone redirects to its case. - [NTSB finding](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-findings/02063040.md): `/ntsb-findings/`; one of NTSB's coded findings (2008 on) by its code's first 2, 4, 6 or 8 digits: category, subcategory, section or finding. Its cases per year, in the probable cause or not, the aircraft models, defining events and other findings in the same cases, and the newest cases. /ntsb-findings lists the categories and the most common findings. - [NTSB defining event](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/240.md): `/ntsb-events/`; an event NTSB marked as the one that best describes an accident (240 is loss of control in flight): its cases per year, phases of flight, aircraft models and the findings in their probable cause. /ntsb-events lists every event, by phase of flight and CICTT category. - [NTSB phase of flight](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-phases/550.md): `/ntsb-phases/`; the cases in one main phase of flight (550 is landing) since 1962: per year, by sub-phase, defining event, finding and aircraft model. 1982-2007 cases carry NTSB's older phase codes, counted through the crosswalk table on /ntsb-phases. ## Search - [Search as Markdown](https://openairdocs.org/search.md?q=fuel+selector): records the query names (an N-number, AD number, STC or data sheet), then the best matches in each collection, with links to their Markdown copies. Add &type= with ad, text (AD text), proposed, saib, acs, ac, acpage (AC pages), stc, stctext (STC certificate text), model, sdr, ntsb (NTSB investigations) or incident (FAA reports) for one collection, paged with &page=. An NTSB number (DCA09MA026) finds its investigation. - [Suggestions](https://openairdocs.org/search/suggest?q=PA-28-181): the top matches for a query as JSON (url, label, title, kind). - [Search page](https://openairdocs.org/search?q=fuel+selector): the same search as HTML; a query that names one record goes straight to it. ## Data dictionary - [Dictionary index](https://openairdocs.org/data/dictionary.md): every table and view in a line, how they join, the pitfalls, and recipes. - [DATA_DICTIONARY.md](https://openairdocs.org/data/latest/DATA_DICTIONARY.md): every table and column in one file (large; the pages below hold the same, a table each). ## Tables Each table's page lists its columns, with types, origins and descriptions, and its rows' page address.
