## Probable cause

The mechanical failure of the left main landing gear leg due to corrosion, resulting in substantial damage to the left struts.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Sequence of events

The events NTSB coded, in order, by phase of flight. The defining event best describes what happened.

- [Landing-landing roll: Landing gear collapse](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/094) (defining event); cases with it: [Piper PA-22-150, 15 cases](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/094/sequence.md?model=7102210), [All aircraft, 1,787 cases](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/094/sequence.md)

## Analysis

The pilot reported that, after landing on a gravel bar in a tailwheel-equipped airplane, as he slowed to taxi speed, the left main gear leg failed. The airplane lost directional control and ground looped which resulted in substantial damage to the left wing struts. A postaccident examination of the main landing gear revealed a fracture in the landing gear tube at a point where it joins the inboard end of the axle likely due to corrosion. Apart from the corrosion found during the postaccident examination, the pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
