## Sequence of events

The events NTSB coded, in order, by phase of flight. The defining event best describes what happened.

- [Landing: Runway excursion](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/300) (defining event); cases with it: [Cessna 177RG, 5 cases](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/300/sequence.md?model=2073709), [All aircraft, 3,643 cases](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb-events/300/sequence.md)

## Analysis

The pilot reported that he flew a higher approach to avoid terrain and powerlines at the approach end of the runway. The airplane landed further down the runway than the pilot anticipated, and he determined the safest course of action was to continue the landing. The airplane overran the runway and collided with an airport perimeter fence. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
