## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS AND FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. THE UNFAVORABLE (VARIABLE) WIND AND SNOW COVERED TERRAIN WERE RELATED FACTORS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - snow covered (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WHILE LANDING IN VARIABLE WIND CONDITIONS. THE AIRPLANE SUBSEQUENTLY WENT OFF THE RUNWAY INTO SNOW, NOSED OVER, AND SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE PILOT SAID THAT HIS INABILITY TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL, AS WELL AS THE VARIABLE WINDS, RESULTED IN THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900331008579A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900331008579A), Mar 31, 1990: Maule M4, Anchorage, AK, Substantial damage. Lost directional control on first landing from skis to wheels. Left runway and overturned in a snowbank.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
