## Probable cause

THE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE GUSTY CROSSWINDS AND SLIPPERY RUNWAY.

  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT HE EXPERIENCED CROSSWINDS OF ABOUT 15 KNOTS, WHICH CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO BE BLOWN OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY DURING THE LANDING ROLL. THE SNOW-COVERED RUNWAY WAS ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN RECENTLY PLOWED AND SLIPPERY. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, THE PILOT WAS RETURNING HOME AFTER SATISFACTORILY COMPLETING HIS COMMERCIAL AIRPLANE CHECK RIDE ABOUT AN HOUR EARLIER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901106049109A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901106049109A), Nov 6, 1990: Cessna 182N, Birchwood, AK, Substantial damage. Veered off runway after landing in a crab and dragged a wing. Ground looped.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
