## Probable cause

THE COLLAPSE OF THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR DURING THE LANDING ROLL DUE TO PREEXISTING CRACKS.

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT ABOUT 2 SECONDS AFTER HE TOUCHED DOWN WITH THE WHEEL/SKI EQUIPPED AIRPLANE, THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AT THE UPPER ATTACHING POINT. EXAMINATION OF THE LEFT OUTBOARD LANDING GEAR SUPPORT (CESSNA PART NUMBER 0713495 64) FOUND THAT IT HAD FAILED DUE TO PREEXISTING CRACKS. THE OPERATOR REPORTED THAT MOST OF THE 4,520 HOURS ON THE AIRPLANE AND THE FAILED SUPPORT WERE ACCUMULATED WITH THE AIRPLANE OPERATING ON ROUGH TERRAIN WITH WHEEL/SKIS INSTALLED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910308006489A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910308006489A), Mar 8, 1991: Cessna 185, Shageluk, AK, Substantial damage. Wheel ski equipped aircraft had the left main gear collapse.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
