## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN A PROPER DESCENT RATE. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS PILOT'S INTENTIONAL ABRUPT MANEUVERING AT A LOW ALTITUDE AND THE FLAPS THAT RETRACTED A KNOTCH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, approach
  - flight control,flap - unlocked (contributing factor)
  - maneuver - intentional, pilot in command
  - altitude - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - proper descent rate - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - none suitable
- Fire, other

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE IN A LOW ALTITUDE STEEP DESCENDING TURN FROM BASE LEG TO FINAL APPROACH, THE FLAPS RETRACTED, AND THE ENGINE SEEMED TO SPUTTER. THE AIRPLANE LANDED HARD IN THE SHALLOW WATER, THEN RAN UP ON THE ROCKS AND NOSED OVER. A POST IMPACT FIRE DESTROYED THE AIRPLANE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910810033239A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910810033239A), Aug 10, 1991: Cessna 185F, Angoon, AK, Destroyed. Had run fuel tank low then made steep turn to final. Unported fuel. Flaps slipped a notch. Hit water ran onto beach

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
