## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE AIRSPEED, RESULTING IN A STALL, HARD LANDING AND COLLAPSE OF THE MAIN LANDING GEAR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - airspeed(vs) - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Main gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,main gear - overload

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT HE ALLOWED THE APPROACH TO THE MOUNTAINTOP TO GET TOO LOW AND SLOW. JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN, ONE WING STALLED, CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO LAND HARD. ONE MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND ONE WING HIT THE GROUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910810033719A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910810033719A), Aug 10, 1991: Piper PA18150, Gulkana, AK, Substantial damage. Too slow on flare. Wing stalled, impacted mountain top strip collapsing right gear. Strip only 500 feet in length.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
