## Probable cause

DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS NOT MAINTAINED. A FACTOR TO THE ACCIDENT WAS: INADEQUATE RECOVERY FROM A BOUNCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - recovery from bounced landing - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - snowbank

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE FOURTH TOUCH AND GO, AFTER THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN, IT BEGAN TO BOUNCE. THE PILOT HELD THE CONTROL YOKE CENTERED OR SLIGHTLY BACK FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO BOUNCE AND THE PILOT DECIDED TO GO AROUND. THE PILOT STATED THAT 'I COUNTERACTED THE EFFECT ON TORQUE WITH RIGHT RUDDER, BUT MAY HAVE OVER COMPENSATED.' AS THE AIRPLANE WAS ACCELERATING IT VEERED LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A SNOW BANK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920326007539A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920326007539A), Mar 26, 1992: Cessna 172N, Anchorage, AK, Substantial damage. Bounced and porpoised on touch and go. Lost control. Veered off runway into a snowbank.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
