## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DELAYED DECISION TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. FACTORS TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: INADEQUATE AIRSPEED AN SOFT/SANDY TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Overrun, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)
  - airspeed - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - aborted takeoff - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - water
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE TAKEOFF FROM A PRIVATE AIRSTRIP, THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED PATCHES OF SOFT SAND. THE AIRPLANE DID NOT ATTAIN SUFFICIENT AIRSPEED TO ALLOW THE AIRPLANE TO TAKEOFF. THE ABORTED TAKEOFF WAS NOT PERFORMED IN TIME TO ALLOW THE AIRPLANE TO STOP BEFORE OVER-RUNNING THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDING WITH THE WATER THAT SURROUNDED THE AIRSTRIP ON THREE SIDES.

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920418012079A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920418012079A), Apr 18, 1992: Cessna 172M, Haines, AK, Substantial damage. Unable to accelerate due soft sand on runway. Aborted and ran off end runway into water. Flipped over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
