## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER ALIGNMENT WITH THE LANDING AREA. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THE GUSTY WIND AND THE TREES.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)
- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
- In flight collision with terrain/water, approach - vfr pattern - final approach

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT, WITH TWO PASSENGERS, DECIDED TO LAND ON A DIRT ROAD AFTER SEEING THAT THE ADJOINING DIRT STRIP WAS VERY MUDDY. THE PILOT SAID THAT WHEN ABOUT 10 FEET OFF THE GROUND DURING THE APPROACH, A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO MOVE TO THE RIGHT, AND THE WING TO HIT SOME SMALL TREES. THE AIRPLANE SPUN AROUND AND CRASHED INTO SOME NEARBY LARGER TREES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920509014019A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920509014019A), May 9, 1992: Cessna 182B, Chitna, AK, Substantial damage. Drifted during landing approach to a road. Wing caught small trees pivoting aircraft into large trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
