## Probable cause

THE DUAL STUDENT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS AND THE INSTRUCTOR'S INADEQUATE SUPERVISION. A FACTOR WAS THE TAILWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, dual student (cause)
  - supervision - inadequate, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
- Gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
- Roll over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

THE INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT WAS LANDING WITH A RIGHT QUARTERING TAILWIND AND THE INSTRUCTOR TOLD THE NON SEA PLANE RATED PILOT TO HOLD THE RIGHT WING DOWN INTO THE WIND. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO VEER TO THE RIGHT. THE DUAL STUDENT APPLIED LEFT RUDDER, BUT THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO VEER TO THE RIGHT. HE THEN APPLIED FULL LEFT RUDDER. THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO SKID SIDEWAYS AND THEN THE LEFT FLOAT COLLAPSED AND THE AIRPLANE ROLLED OVER TO THE LEFT AND SANK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920609019849A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920609019849A), Jun 9, 1992: Bbavia 8GCBC, Elephant Lake, AK, Substantial damage. Swerved on quartering tailwind landing. Student used too much rudder. Dipped wing in water. Collapsed left float.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
