## Probable cause

THE PILOTS FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE CROSSWIND AND THE LARGE BOULDERS (OBJECTS) BESIDE THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, taxi - from landing
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, taxi - from landing
  - object - other (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING THE POST LANDING TAXI THE PILOT ENCOUNTERED AN APPROXIMATE 8 TO 10 KNOT CROSSWIND. THE AIRPLANE VEERED OFF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH SOME LARGE BOULDERS BESIDE THE RUNWAY. WHEN ABOUT 5 MILES OUT FOR LANDING, THE PILOT HAD BEEN ADVISED BY THE FSS OF THE CROSSWIND CONDITION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920808029939A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920808029939A), Aug 8, 1992: Tcraft BCS12D, Sitka, AK, Substantial damage. Allowed aircraft to weathervane into crosswind on landing. Ran off runway into large rocks.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
