## Probable cause

PILOT IN COMMANDS'S POOR PREFLIGHT PLANNING/PREPARATION. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF AIRCRAFT TAKEOFF PERFORMANCE, LACK OF RECENCY OF PIC EXPERIENCE IN TYPE OF OPERATION, LOSS OF AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE TAKEOFF CAPABILITIES, TERRAIN CONDITION OF SOFT WET SNOW.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - aircraft performance,takeoff capability - loss,partial (contributing factor)
  - preflight planning/preparation - poor, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of recent experience in type operation, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - snow covered (contributing factor)
  - airspeed(vlof) - not attained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - acft/equip,inadequate handling/perf capabilities, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose over, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - berm (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE C206 SKIPLANE DECELERATED UPON ENCOUNTERING DEEP WET SNOW PRIOR TO LIFT OFF. WITNESSES ON BOARD REPORTED THAT THE PILOT ELECTED TO ABORT, VEERED TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID TREES AND STRUCK A DITCH, BRUSH AND IRREGULAR TERRAIN AND NOSED OVER. INVESTIGATION ON SCENE CONFIRMED THE CONDITIONS THAT SUPPORTS FINDINGS OF RUNWAY CONDITIONS. NO SKI ANOMALY WAS FOUND AT SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT OR ON THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE. THE SKI OPERATION MAY HAVE BEEN FIRST OF SEASON, NO EVIDENCE THAT PILOT HAD RECENT EXPERIENCE IN SNOW SKI TAKEOFF. PILOT REPORTED THAT HE BELIEVED THE RIGHT SKI DRAGGED ON TAKEOFF DUE TO LOW TIRE PRESSURE WHICH ALLOWED THE INSERT ON WHICH THE TIRE RESTS TO DRAG IN THE SNOW.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920915036719A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920915036719A), Sep 15, 1992: Cessna U206C, Fairbanks, AK, Substantial damage. Encountered soft snow on takeoff. Aborted. Overran strip. Struck a snow berm and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
