## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, approach - vfr pattern - downwind
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions
  - carburetor heat - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of recent experience in kind of aircraft, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PLT REPORTED THAT WHILE ON DOWNWIND THE ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH. THE PLT APPLIED CARBURETOR HEAT AND THE ENGINE QUIT. A TURN TOWARD A LANDING AREA WAS MADE; HOWEVER, THE ACFT COLLIDED WITH TREES. WEATHER CONDITIONS AT THE TIME WERE FAVORABLE FOR CARBURETOR ICING. THE PLT NORMALLY OPERATES JET AIR CARRIER TYPE ACFT. MOST OF HIS EXPERIENCE IN A J3 CUB WAS OVER 20 YEARS PRIOR TO THIS FLT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19860607021999A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19860607021999A), Jun 7, 1986: Piper J3C65, Fayetteville, GA, Substantial damage. Landed aircraft in trees after engine failure in pattern. Engine failed due to carburetor icing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
