## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE ENGINE MAIN OIL LINE WHICH ALLOWED THE ENGINE OIL TO BE IGNITED BY THE HOT ENGINE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Fire, maneuvering - aerial application
  - lubricating system,oil hose - burst (cause)
- Main gear collapsed, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE SECOND SPRAY OPERATION OF THE MORNING HE SMELLED RUBBER BURNING. THE AIRPLANE WAS DIVERTED TO A NEAR BY FIELD AND LANDED. THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED JUST PRIOR TO STOPPING THE AIRPLANE. GROUND FIRE DEMOLISHED THE AIRPLANE. AN FAA INSPECTOR STATED THAT THE MAIN OIL LINE APPARENTLY SPLIT AND SPILLED OIL ON THE ENGINE WHICH IGNITED. THE ENGINE HAD 250 HOURS SINCE ITS LAST INSPECTION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900804033729A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900804033729A), Aug 4, 1990: Ayres S2RR1820, Americus, GA, Destroyed. Smelled burning rubber on spray run, returned to base. Fire erupted landing. Rubber oil line burst, leaked on exhaust

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
