## Probable cause

ENGINE MALFUNCTION FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE UNSEEN DITCH WITH WHICH THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, takeoff - initial climb
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING THE INITIAL CLIMB AFTER TAKE OFF THE ENGINE QUIT. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE IN A SOYBEAN FIELD, AND DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE AIRPLANE HIT A DITCH. AFTER THE ACCIDENT THE SPARK PLUGS WERE FOUND TO BE SOOT COLORED. THERE WAS CONTINUITY OF THE ENGINE DRIVE TRAIN. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT'S OPERATING MANUAL THE BOOST PUMP SHOULD BE OFF FOR TAKE OFF. HOWEVER, ITS OPERATION WITH THE ENGINE DRIVEN PUMP WOULD NOT HAVE ENRICHED THE MIXTURE. A REASON FOR THE REPORTED MALFUNCTION WAS NOT DETERMINED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900705024079A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900705024079A), Jul 5, 1990: Beech C24R, Brunswick, NC, Substantial damage. Engine quit after turning boost pump off. Book says pump off. Use only for starting or failure of engine fuel pump.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
