## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING AND PREPARATION, IN THAT HE DID NOT ENSURE THAT ENOUGH FUEL WAS ON BOARD TO COMPLETE THE FLIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - single engine aircraft
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

ON HIS SECOND FLIGHT OF THE DAY, THE PRIVATE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE ENGINE QUIT SHORT OF THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. UNABLE TO RESTART, HE FORCE LANDED THE AIRPLANE IN A FIELD, AND IT NOSED OVER. ONE PINT OF FUEL WAS RECOVERED FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM AT THE ACCIDENT SITE. THE PILOT DID NOT VISUALLY CHECK HIS FUEL SUPPLY PRIOR TO TAKEOFF ON THE SECOND FLIGHT. HE REPORTED THAT THE ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED WITH BETTER FUEL MANAGEMENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901026065809A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901026065809A), Oct 26, 1990: Cessna A150K, Dublin, GA, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel on local flight. Nosed over on forced landing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
