## Probable cause

THE PROPABLE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS THE RUNWAY INCURSION BY THE DEER DURING THE PILOT'S TAKEOFF ROLL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff - roll/run
  - object - animal(s) (cause)
  - abort - performed, pilot in command

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS ON TAKEOFF ROLL WHEN HE NOTICED FOUR DEER APPROACHING THE RUNWAY FROM THE RIGHT. THREE OF THE DEER STOPPED AT THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, HOWEVER, THE FOURTH DEER BEGAN TO RUN ALONG THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND TOWARDS THE AIRPLANE. THE DEER COLLIDED WITH THE RIGHT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER, AND THE TAKEOFF WAS ABORTED. AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRPLANE AFTER THE ACCIDENT REVEALED THAT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE HAD OCCURRED IN THE TAIL SECTION OF THE AIRPLANE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901026047659A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901026047659A), Oct 26, 1990: Cessna 152, Centerville, TN, Substantial damage. Deer ran into tail of aircraft during takeoff roll. Pilot then aborted the takeoff.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
