## Probable cause

PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE WINGTIP CLEARANCE DURING TAXI.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water collision with object, taxi - from landing
  - object - pole
  - clearance - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

AS THE PILOT WAS TAXIING TO PARK AT THE AIRPORT, THE LEFT WING CONTACTED A TWO-FOOT DIAMETER STEEL POLE, WHICH SUPPORTS A LARGE PARKING CANOPY. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS WATCHING THE LINESMAN WHEN THE COLLISION OCCURRED. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE LINE MAN DID NOT GIVE HIM INSTRUCTIONS TO STOP OR TURN, NOR DID HE GIVE HIM ANY INDICATION THAT HE WAS TOO CLOSE THE OBSTRUCTION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901129055429A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901129055429A), Nov 29, 1990: Cessna 172N, Atlanta, GA, Substantial damage. Taxiing to park struck a metal pole with left wing. Lineman failed to warn pilot.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
