## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO PROPERLY COMPENSATE FOR WIND CONDITIONS. A FACTOR TO THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE GUSTING WINDS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN A GUST OF WIND PICKED UP THE LEFT WING AND THE PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE VEERED OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, CARTWHEELED WHEN THE NOSE WHEEL DUG INTO THE DIRT, AND CAME TO REST IN AN UPRIGHT ATTITUDE. NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS WERE REPORTED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910623023179A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910623023179A), Jun 23, 1991: Maule MXT7180, Mobile, AL, Substantial damage. Wind gust picked up a wing on landing lost control. Veered off runway. Nose wheel dug in. Aircraft cartwheeled.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
