## Probable cause

THE PASSENGER'S FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER PROCEDURES TO WALK BEHIND THE AIRPLANE. FACTORS WERE THE DAWN LIGHT CONDITIONS AND THE LIGHT RAIN.

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE WAS STANDING WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. A PERSONAL FLIGHT HAD BEEN MADE TO THE AIRPORT TO DROP OFF TWO PASSENGERS. AFTER EXITING THE AIRPLANE, ONE PASSENGER ASSISTED HIS WIFE TO DEPLANE. SHE WAS PROVIDED AN UMBRELLA BY A LINE PERSON, THEN SHE PROCEEDED TO THE TERMINAL. THE HUSBAND REFUSED AN UMBRELLA. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT AND THE LINE PERSON, AS THE MALE PASSENGER WALKED AWAY FROM THE AIRPLANE, HE WALKED INTO THE PROPELLER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Propeller/rotor contact to person, standing - engine(s) operating

  - weather condition - rain (contributing factor)
  - light condition - dawn (contributing factor)

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920108000319A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920108000319A), Jan 8, 1992: Cessna 177B, Memphis, TN. Passenger disembarked and walked into the idling propeller.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
