## Probable cause

THE IMPROPER FLARE DURING THE TOUCHDOWN PHASE OF THE APPROACH BY THE PILOT WHICH EXCEEDED THE DESIGN LIMITS OF THE AIRFRAME AND THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR ASSEMBLY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)
- Gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear - overload
  - design stress limits of aircraft - exceeded, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

WHILE ON SHORT FINAL TO LAND ON THE POLO FIELD AT BOONE HALL PLANTATION, THE AIRPLANE DEVELOPED A HIGH SINK RATE AND TOUCHED DOWN HARD. THE HARD LANDING CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR ASSEMBLY. NO MECHANICAL PROBLEM OR WIND GUST CONDITION WAS REPORTED BY THE PILOT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920408013259A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920408013259A), Apr 8, 1992: Wsk PZL104, Mt Pleasant, SC, Substantial damage. Hard landing on a polo field caused substantial damage. Failed to check high sink rate on final.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
