## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN FLYING SPEED DURING FINAL APPROACH WHICH RESULTED IN A STALL AND AN UNCONTROLLED COLLISION WITH THE GROUND SHORT OF THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE HAD COMPLETED A LOCAL PERSONAL FLIGHT AND WAS RETURNING TO THE PRIVATE SOD STRIP. WHILE ON SHORT FINAL TO THE SOUTH RUNWAY, THE PILOT STALLED THE AIRPLANE 15 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND AND CRASHED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY SURFACE. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE DID NOT EXPERIENCE A MECHANICAL OR SYSTEM MALFUNCTION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920726027659A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920726027659A), Jul 26, 1992: Cessna 172D, Fairhope, AL, Substantial damage. Stalled on short final. Impaced short of Private strip. Sheared nose wheel. Fork dug in. Aircraft flipped over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
