## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED CONTROL, WHICH RESULTED IN A LOW ALTITUDE STALL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, go-around (vfr)
  - airspeed(vs) - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - inadvertent, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

DURING ROUNDOUT FOR LANDING, THE PILOT REALIZED THAT THE GEAR WAS NOT EXTENDED AND PITCHED UP IN AN ATTEMPT TO GO AROUND. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE THEN NOTICED INDICATIONS OF A STALL AND APPLIED FULL POWER, BUT WAS UNABLE TO STOP HIS DESCENT. THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH TERRAIN APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE BEYOND THE RUNWAY IN A RIGHT BANK, NOSE-LOW ATTITUDE.

## Factual narrative

On October 16, 1993, at 1140 central daylight time, a Mooney M20E, N6823V, was substantially damaged following a collision with terrain during a go-around attempt at Montvale Airpark in Maryville, Tennessee. The commercial pilot received minor injuries in the accident. The aircraft was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 by the pilot. Visual meteorological conditions existed at the time, and no flight plan had been filed for the personal flight. The flight departed Kingston, Tennessee, about 1127, and was destined for Maryville, Tennessee.

The pilot stated that he was on short final for the runway, and realized that the landing gear had not been extended. He then attempted a go-around. Witnesses stated that they observed the aircraft on short final for the runway, and the landing gear was not extended. The witnesses stated that the aircraft engine accelerated and the aircraft nose came up. The witnesses stated that it appeared the aircraft then stalled and crashed into the terrain on the airport.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19931016039519A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19931016039519A), Oct 16, 1993: Mooney M20E, Maryville, TN, Substantial damage. Noticed gear up on flare. Ditched up on go around. Stalled and impacted on climbing turn out.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
