## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Gear not extended, approach
  - landing gear, gear locking mechanism - movement restricted (cause)
  - maintenance, installation - improper, company maintenance personnel (cause)
- Nose down, landing - roll
  - landing gear,nose gear - unlocked (cause)

## Analysis

THE ACFT HAD A MAIN GEAR ONLY LANDING AFTER THE NOSE GEAR FAILED TO LOCK DOWN. THIS WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT SINCE A NEWLY OVERHAULED NOSE GEAR WAS INSTALLED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT WHEN THE NOSE GEAR WAS INSTALLED AND BEFORE IT WAS CORRECTED, A WRONG WASHER WAS USED WITH A BOLT TO INSTALL PART OF THE DOWNLOCK MECHANISM. THIS RESULTED IN AN UNDETECTED PERMANENT REDUCTION, BELOW THE DESIGN CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE DOWNLOCK PLUNGER AND ITS INTERNAL-BEARING. EXAMINATION OF THE DOWNLOCK AFTER THE LANDING INCIDENT DISCLOSED THAT THERE WAS SCORING OF THE PLUNGER AND ITS BEARING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Incident 19871003078049I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19871003078049I), Oct 3, 1987: Fokker F28MK1000, Baltimore, MD, Minor damage. No nose gear down indication on approach with slow retraction at rollout. Improper washer in downlock mechanism.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
