## Probable cause

THE IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF THE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS ON THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise - normal
  - engine assembly,connecting rod - failure,total (cause)
  - maintenance, overhaul, major - improper, other maintenance personnel (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose down, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,nose gear - overload

## Analysis

SHORTLY AFTER CLIMBING TO 6500 FEET THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD SOUND, STARTED TO SHAKE, AND LOST POWER. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING DURING WHICH THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE PROPELLER WAS DAMAGED. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD IN THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER HAD FAILED. THE ANTI-REVERSING TABS WERE FOUND BENT FLUSH WITH THE CONNECTING ROD ASSEMBLY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900427016629A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900427016629A), Apr 27, 1990: Blanca 1730, Davis, WV, Substantial damage. Rough engine and power loss. Force landed in a swamp. Broken connecting rod. Rod bearings were installed backwards.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
