## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
- Gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - landing gear - overload

## Analysis

DURING THE LANDING FLARE, THE PILOT REPORTED A GUST OF WIND BLEW THE AIRPLANE TO THE LEFT AND THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO VEER OFF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE STARTED TO INITIATE A GO-AROUND AND PUSHED THE THROTTLE FULL FORWARD. THE PILOT STATED HE THEN REALIZED THAT IF HE CONTINUED THE GO-AROUND, THE AIRPLANE MAY NOT CLEAR SURROUNDING TREES. THE PILOT STATED HE THEN PULLED THE POWER BACK AND THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED THE GROUND AT AN AWKWARD ANGLE, COLLAPSING THE RIGHT MAIN AND NOSE GEAR. THE PILOT COMMENTED, 'IN HINDSIGHT-AT TIME OF FULL THROTTLE, TOTAL RIGHT RUDDER IMMEDIATELY AND RIGHT AILERON MAY HAVE DONE IT.' THE PILOT REPORTED THERE WERE NO AIRPLANE MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS PRIOR TO THE TOUCHDOWN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920711024879A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920711024879A), Jul 11, 1992: Beech A35, Toms River, NJ, Substantial damage. Reported crosswind gust blew aircraft off side of runway. Began go around. Aborted due to trees. Landed sideways.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
