## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING BY SELECTING UNSUITABLE SOFT TERRAIN WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER DURING AN ABORTED TAKEOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - aborted
  - airspeed - not obtained, pilot in command
  - aborted takeoff - initiated, pilot in command
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - soft, pilot in command (cause)
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose over, takeoff - aborted

## Analysis

DURING THE TAKEOFF GROUND RUN, THE PILOT REALIZED THE AIRPLANE DID NOT HAVE ADEQUATE AIRSPEED TO TAKEOFF. HE ABORTED THE TAKEOFF AND DURING THE ROLL OUT THE LEFT MAIN GEAR ENCOUNTERED SOFT MUDDY TERRAIN. THE AIRPLANE VEERED LEFT AND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER. THE PILOT REPORTED THE GRASS AIRSTRIP CONDITION WAS DRY WITH PERIODIC PATCHES OF SOFT TERRAIN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920907035319A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920907035319A), Sep 7, 1992: Cessna 172, Groveport, OH, Substantial damage. Unable to accelerate on short rough strip. Aborted. Hit a soft mud area and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
