## Probable cause

AN IMPROPER FLARE MADE BY THE PILOT RESULTING IN A HARD LANDING AND MAIN ROTOR BLADE TAIL BOOM STRIKE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

DURING CRUISE, THE PILOT THOUGHT THE HELICOPTER'S ENGINE WAS MALFUNCTIONING SO HE MADE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING. DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS NOT MAINTAINED DURING THE LANDING WHICH RESULTED IN A HARD LANDING AND SUBSEQUENT MAIN ROTOR BLADE TAIL BOOM STRIKE. THE ON SCENE INVESTIGATION DID NOT REVEAL ANY MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS OR HELICOPTER ANOMALIES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920913036529A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920913036529A), Sep 13, 1992: Enstrm F28A, Shelbyville, KY, Substantial damage. Believed engine problem. Made hard impact in a field on precautionary landing. None found. No license or medical.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
