## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING LANDING. THE SNOW COVERED RUNWAY WAS A RELATED FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - airport facilities,runway/landing area condition - snow covered (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent, pilot in command
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - snowbank

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT STATED THAT AS THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN ON THE SNOW PACKED RUNWAY, IT BEGAN TO BE 'JARRED TO THE LEFT.' HE APPLIED BACK PRESSURE, THE AIRPLANE LIFTED OFF THE RUNWAY AND SETTLED BACK DOWN. AGAIN IT VEERED TO THE LEFT WHILE FULL OPPOSITE RUDDER WAS APPLIED. THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED A SNOW BANK ON THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER. NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION WAS REPORTED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930117029239A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930117029239A), Jan 17, 1993: Cessna 152, Saratoga Spring, NY, Substantial damage. Lost directional control landing in a crabbed angle on snow covered runway, struck snowbank and flipped over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
