## Probable cause

THE LOOSE BATTERY CABLE TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL, RESULTING IN TOTAL POWER LOSS. A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR AN EMERGENCY LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, go-around (vfr)
  - ignition system - inoperative (cause)
  - electrical system,battery - disconnected (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - snow covered (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING A GO AROUND, THE AIRPLANE'S ENGINE LOST TOTAL POWER. THE PILOT STATED HE MAINTAINED THE AIRPLANE'S AIRSPEED AND MADE A STEEP LEFT TURN TO AVOID HITTING HOMES AND TREES. AFTER THE TURN, THE AIRPLANE IMPACTED SNOW COVERED GROUND AND NOSED OVER. A POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE BATTERY CABLE TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL WAS LOOSE, AND THE BATTERY CHARGE WAS LOW. THE ENGINE'S IGNITION SYSTEM WAS POWERED BY THE BATTERY. NO OTHER AIRFRAME OR ENGINE ANOMALIES WERE FOUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930327029469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930327029469A), Mar 27, 1993: Amtrqk QUICKIE, Durhamville, NY, Substantial damage. Engine quit on climbout from low pass. Struck trees. Battery cable loose. Battery low charge. Battery ignition.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
