## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING ROLL, WHICH RESULTED IN AN INADVERTENT SWERVE, AND HIS DELAYED REMEDIAL ACTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- Overrun, landing - aborted
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - aborted
  - object - tree(s)
  - remedial action - delayed, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 2,500 FEET PAST THE APPROACH END OF THE 4,000 FOOT RUNWAY. DURING TOUCHDOWN OF THE NOSE GEAR, THE AIRPLANE PULLED LEFT AND VEERED OFF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT GOT THE AIRPLANE BACK ON THE RUNWAY AT ABOUT 3,700 FEET PAST THE APPROACH END. HE STATED HE ADDED POWER AND ATTEMPTED TO TAKEOFF, BUT RAN OUT OF RUNWAY AND DID NOT GAIN ALTITUDE. THE AIRPLANE ROLLED OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY, HIT TREES AND WENT INTO A RAVINE ABOUT 500 FEET PAST THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED THERE WERE NO AIRFRAME OR ENGINE ANOMALIES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930508012639A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930508012639A), May 8, 1993: Cessna 172N, Falmouth, KY, Substantial damage. Veered off runway on landing. Swerved back on runway. Began go around and struck trees 500 feet off runway end.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
