## Probable cause

The pilot not turning off the carburetor heat prior to takeoff resulting in the engine's reduced performance, and his failure to remain clear of the tree during takeoff.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Analysis

The pilot reported that he performed a takeoff and landed to a full stop. During his next takeoff he stated that he noticed that his airplane was not climbing and his RPM's were low. He clipped a small tree and elected to land in a nearby field. He said, "I now realize I never turned off carb heat before the second takeoff."

- Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report, NTSB Form 6120.1 (item 1, .PDF, 440 KB): https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket/Document/docBLOB?ID=40316917&FileExtension=.PDF&FileName=Pilot%2FOperator%20Aircraft%20Accident%20Report,%20NTSB%20Form%206120.1-Master.PDF

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
