## Probable cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll on a rough runway surface.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Sequence of events

The events NTSB coded, in order, by phase of flight. The defining event best describes what happened.

## Analysis

The pilot was landing on a runway composed of turf. During the landing roll, the airplane's nosewheel encountered a hump in the terrain located at approach end of the runway. The nose gear collapsed, resulting in the propeller striking the ground and the airplane nosing over; it came to rest inverted. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical anomalies with the airplane.

## Factual narrative

According to a written statement from the pilot, during the landing to runway 20 (3,500 feet by 50 feet, turf) the nosewheel impacted a "significant hump" on the approach end of the runway. The nose gear collapsed, the propeller struck the ground, and the airplane nosed over coming to rest inverted. The left wing was crushed aft and broken and the vertical stabilizer was bent. The pilot did not report any mechanical anomalies with the airplane. In a follow-up conversation, the pilot reported that he was previously aware of the rough runway environment.

## Docket (1 files)

The files NTSB released with the investigation on November 18, 2010, on NTSB's docket system: https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket?ProjectID=77671. 595 KB in all.

- Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report, NTSB Form 6120.1 (item 1, .PDF, 595 KB): https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket/Document/docBLOB?ID=40339656&FileExtension=.PDF&FileName=Pilot%2FOperator%20Aircraft%20Accident%20Report,%20NTSB%20Form%206120.1-Redacted.PDF

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
