## Probable cause

The student pilot's loss of directional control during the landing.

## Findings

NTSB's coded findings; those marked are part of the probable cause.

## Sequence of events

The events NTSB coded, in order, by phase of flight. The defining event best describes what happened.

## Analysis

The student pilot reported that during a full-stop landing the airplane veered hard to the right shortly after the nosewheel touched down. He attempted to maintain directional control using the left brake, but the airplane exited the runway and struck a runway sign, substantially damaging the firewall. Postaccident examination of the airplane did not reveal any preaccident mechanical anomalies to explain the loss of directional control. The wind in the area was between calm and 5 knots at the time of the accident.

## Factual narrative

The student pilot reported that during a full stop landing the airplane veered hard to the right shortly after the nose wheel touched down. He attempted to maintain directional control using the left brake, but the airplane exited the runway and struck a runway sign, substantially damaging the firewall of the airplane. Examination of the airplane by an independent airplane mechanic did not reveal any preaccident anomalies to explain the loss of directional control.

## Docket (2 files)

The files NTSB released with the investigation on March 9, 2011, on NTSB's docket system: https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket?ProjectID=78272. 61 KB in all.

- Pilot Statement (item 1, .PDF, 51 KB): https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket/Document/docBLOB?ID=40344745&FileExtension=.PDF&FileName=Pilot%20Statement-Master.PDF
- Mechanic Statement (item 2, .PDF, 10 KB): https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket/Document/docBLOB?ID=40344748&FileExtension=.PDF&FileName=Mechanic%20Statement-Redacted.PDF

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
