## Probable cause

The pilot's inadequate compensation for the crosswind during landing. Factors were the crosswind and the ditch.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing

## Analysis

The airplane was damaged during landing when it departed the runway surface and nosed over in a ditch. The pilot reported that he attempted a landing in which he executed a go-around. He reported that during the second landing attempt the airplane touched down and veered to the left. The airplane subsequently went off the runway and into a ditch along the side of the runway. The airplane nosed over in the ditch. The pilot reported no mechanical deficiencies with regard to the airplane. The recorded winds about 15 minutes prior to the accident were 160 degrees at 10 knots. The airplane was landing on runway 22.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 20061124026889A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20061124026889A), Nov 24, 2006: Cessna 150J, South Haven, MI, Substantial damage. (-23) Aircraft landed with a crosswind and failed to stay on the runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
