## Analysis

DURING A PLEASURE FLIGHT, THE PILOT ELECTED TO MAKE AN APPROACH TO A NEW RUNWAY THAT HE WAS BUILDING. HIS APPROACH WAS MADE FROM WEST TO EAST; THE WIND WAS REPORTED TO BE FROM THE NORTH AT 7 KTS. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE THROTTLED THE ENGINE BACK TO A NORMAL GLIDE AT 65 MPH AND HE WAS LOOKING AT THE RUNWAY WHEN A GUST OF WIND TIPPED THE LEFT WING. SHORTLY AFTER, THE LEFT WING STRUCK A TREE ABOUT 500 FT FROM THE APPROACH END OF THE RUNWAY. THE PLANE CRASHED AND CAME TO REST ABOUT 300 FT FROM THE RUNWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19820502018789A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19820502018789A), May 2, 1982: Piper PA12, Quincy, IN, Substantial damage. Allowed a wing to dip into trees on low final for Private strip. Crash landed and nosed over 300 feet from runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
