## Probable cause

THE TAIL WHEEL SPRING BECOMING DISCONNECTED RESULTING IN THE PILOT'S INABILITY TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - landing gear,tailwheel assembly - disconnected (cause)
  - landing gear,tailwheel - vibration
  - directional control - not possible, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

A SEVERE TAIL WHEEL SHIMMY WAS EXPERIENCED DURING THE LANDING ROLL. DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS LOST AND THE AIRPLANE TRAVELED OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY WHERE IT CONTACTED A DITCH. DURING THE INVESTIGATION, THE LEFT SIDE TAIL WHEEL SPRING WAS FOUND ON THE RUNWAY. THE RIGHT SIDE SPRING REMAINED ATTACHED TO THE RUDDER, BUT WAS DISCONNECTED AT THE TAIL WHEEL STEERING HORN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890827031929A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890827031929A), Aug 27, 1989: Amtrpt PITTSSPECIAL, Mount Pleasant, MI, Substantial damage. Tail wheel spring broke on landing. Caused a bad shimmy. Lost control veered off runway and struck a ditch bank.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
