## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE VISUAL LOOKOUT, RESULTING IN COLLISION WITH A POWER LINE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, maneuvering - aerial application
  - object - wire,transmission
  - visual lookout - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - open field

## Analysis

A PILOT(ENGAGED IN AERIAL APPLICATION) HAD MADE A SURVEY PASS AROUND THE FIELD, NOTING A POWER LINE. ON THE FOURTH RUN, THE BIPLANE STRUCK THE BOTTOM LINE WITH ITS UPPER WING. THE PILOT STATED HE UNDERFLEW THE LINES ON AN EARLIER RUN, BUT ON THE ACCIDENT PASS, HE MISTOOK THE SECOND LINE FOR THE BOTTOM WIRE UNTIL TOO CLOSE TO CORRECT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900626022729A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900626022729A), Jun 26, 1990: Scwzer G164B, Deer Grove, IL, Substantial damage. Flying under wires, struck powerline, rolled inverted impacted and stopped upright. Damage to aircraft extensive.

## Other investigations on N8483K (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA25LA342](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA25LA342), Sep 9, 2025: Schweizer G-164B (N8483K), Dover, DE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s exceedance of the critical angle of attack which resulted in an aerodynamic stall at an altitude too low to recover.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
