## Probable cause

WATER CONTAMINATION OF THE FUEL, AND THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT, WHICH RESULTED IN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, takeoff - initial climb
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - contamination (cause)
- Forced landing, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)

## Analysis

DURING THE INITIAL TAKEOFF CLIMB AT AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 50 TO 100 FT AGL, A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER OCCURRED. THE PILOT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER/PILOT TOOK OVER THE CONTROLS AND BANKED THE AIRPLANE TO LAND IN A FIELD ALONG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED THE TERRAIN WITH THE RIGHT WING. POST-ACCIDENT INSPECTION REVEALED WATER IN BOTH FUEL TANKS AND IN THE CARBURETOR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900522017029A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900522017029A), May 22, 1990: Cessna 172, Urbana, OH, Substantial damage. Engine quit on takeoff. Johnson left seat, pilot at control. Owens took over. Both pilots said owens PIC.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
