## Probable cause

INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT BY THE PILOT AND FUEL EXHAUSTION DUE TO AN INADEQUATE SUPPLY OF FUEL. THE UNRELIABLE FUEL QUANTITY GAUGE WAS A RELATED FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - engine instruments, fuel quantity gage - unreliable (contributing factor)
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - fuel supply - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - wet
  - terrain condition - soft

## Analysis

WHILE THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT IN LEVEL CRUISE, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH, THEN LOST POWER COMPLETELY. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED RESTART PROCEDURES WITHOUT SUCCESS, AND CONDUCTED A FORCED LANDING IN A MUDDY FIELD, WHERE THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF USABLE FUEL ON BOARD, AND NO INDICATION OF SPILLED FUEL AT THE ACCIDENT SITE.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
