## Probable cause

FAILURE OF PILOT-IN-COMMAND TO ADEQUATELY COMPENSATE FOR WIND CONDITIONS WHICH RESULTED IN A LOSS OF AIRCRAFT CONTROL. THE UNFAVORABLE WIND CONDITIONS (WINDSHEAR, CROSSWIND & TURBULENCE) WERE RELATED FACTORS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - turbulence (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - aborted landing - attempted, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - aborted

## Analysis

THE PLT MADE AN APCH TO LAND ON RWY 21 WITH WINDS FROM THE WNW AT ABOUT 10 KTS. HE STATED A X-WIND WAS BLOWING OVER A LAKE & SOME TREES ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE RWY. DURING THE FLARE, THE ACFT ENCTRD TURBULENCE & THE PLT LOST CONTROL OF THE PLANE. SUBSEQUENTLY, IT 'SPUN AND CARTWHEELED OFF' THE RWY, THEN CAME TO REST ABOUT 250 FT FROM THE LEFT EDGE OF THE RWY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900325005309A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900325005309A), Mar 25, 1990: Cessna 150M, Indianapolis, IN, Substantial damage. Encountered turbulence landing. Aircraft slammed onto runway bounced rotated and cartwheeled before stopping.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
