## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE INSTRUCTOR TO CORRECT A LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING A LANDING ROLL IN A TIMELY MANNER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, dual student (contributing factor)
  - remedial action - delayed, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE NOSED OVER DURING A NIGHT LANDING. THE AIRPLANE WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED, ALTHOUGH NEITHER OF THE TWO PERSONS ABOARD THE AIRPLANE WERE INJURED. THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR PILOT IN COMMAND WAS GIVING AN AIRPLANE CHECKOUT TO A PRIVATE PILOT WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE PRIVATE PILOT HAD JUST TOUCHED DOWN AFTER DOING A NO LANDING LIGHT APPROACH. DURING THE ROLLOUT THE AIRPLANE STARTED VEERING TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. THE INSTRUCTOR ATTEMPTED TO ASSIST THE PILOT IN MAINTAINING DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. DURING THESE ATTEMPTS AT CONTROL THE AIRPLANE VEERED INTO THE SOFT GROUND ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900412010149A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900412010149A), Apr 12, 1990: Cessna 172RG, Romeoville, IL, Substantial damage. Aircraft veered left on no landing light approach. Failed to correct. Wheel hit soft mud. Nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
