## Probable cause

PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRCRAFT CONTROL WHILE TAXIING IN GUSTY CROSSWIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with weather, taxi - to takeoff
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, taxi - to takeoff

## Analysis

WHILE TAXIING FOR TAKEOFF IN GUSTY CROSSWIND CONDITIONS, A GUST OF WIND LIFTED THE LEFT WING OF THE AIRCRAFT AND IT NOSED OVER, COMING TO REST INVERTED ON THE TAXIWAY. THE PILOT ESTIMATED THE WINDS TO BE OUT OF 250 DEGREES AT 25 KNOTS, WITH GUSTS TO 35 KNOTS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900510015449A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900510015449A), May 10, 1990: Piper PA22150, Akron, OH, Substantial damage. Taxied out for local flight with gusty surface wind. Aircraft was blown over by wind gust.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
