## Probable cause

THE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN AIRCRAFT CONTROL AFTER ENCOUNTERING GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - encountered, pilot in command
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - wet

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT DURING THE TAKEOFF GROUND RUN, JUST PRIOR TO LIFT-OFF, 'A WIND GUST CAUGHT PLANE FROM LEFT.' HE REPORTED THAT WHEN THE WIND DIMINISHED SUDDENLY HIS REACTION WASN'T FAST ENOUGH AND THE AIRCRAFT VEERED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT BOGGED DOWN IN THE SOFT, MUDDY GROUND AT THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, AND CAME TO A STOP NOSED DOWN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900603017919A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900603017919A), Jun 3, 1990: Beech F33A, Port Clinton, OH, Substantial damage. Lost directional control on takeoff roll in gusty wind. Nosed down in soft mud off side of runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
