## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CLEARANCE FROM OBJECTS DURING A GO-AROUND. FACTOR WAS UNFAVORABLE WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, go-around (vfr)
  - object - tree(s)
  - clearance - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind

## Analysis

THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH TREES AND TERRAIN WHILE ATTEMPTING A GO-AROUND. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE WAS EXPERIENCING WIND GUSTS ON FINAL APPROACH. JUST AS THE AIRPLANE WAS ABOUT TO TOUCH DOWN HE SAID THE AIRPLANE WAS LIFTED BACK INTO THE AIR. HE INITIATED A GO-AROUND AND THE LEFT WING STRUCK A TREE AND THE AIRPLANE CRASHED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900622021859A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900622021859A), Jun 22, 1990: Mooney M20J, Kelleys Island, OH, Destroyed. On landing picked up by wind gust. Began go around, wing tip hit tree top. Aircraft spun into trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
