## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT RESULTED IN A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE FUEL SYSTEM.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, takeoff - initial climb
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - contamination
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DURING INITIAL TAKEOFF CLIMB AT APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET AGL. THERE WAS NO SUITABLE TERRAIN AVAILABLE FOR FORCED LANDING, SO PILOT ATTEMPTED TO RETURN TO FIELD AND IMPACTED IN SOFT, MARSHY AREA ADJACENT TO DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT FUEL TANKS, CARBURETOR BOWL, AND GASCOLATOR WERE CONTAMINATED WITH WATER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900630023059A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900630023059A), Jun 30, 1990: Cessna 182P, Cornell, WI, Destroyed. Engine quit on takeoff. Tried to turn back, stalled and crashed. Fuel system contained large amount of water.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
