## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRCRAFT DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND KEEP THE AIRCRAFT ON THE RUNWAY DURING THE LANDING ROLL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - terrain condition - soft (contributing factor)
  - ground loop/swerve - encountered, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE LEFT AND HIS RIGHT RUDDER AND BRAKE INPUTS WEREN'T SUFFICIENT TO CORRECT FOR THE DRIFT. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE 48' WIDE RUNWAY AND ENCOUNTERED SOFT TERRAIN AND A DITCH.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900704023289A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900704023289A), Jul 4, 1990: Beech V35B, Romeoville, IL, Substantial damage. Swerved on landing, a wheel hit soft shoulder, veered aircraft into ditch. Found sun glasses wedged in rudder hole.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
