## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN POSITIVE CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE WHILE LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE PILOT'S LACK OF TOTAL FLIGHT EXPERIENCE, AND INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR CROSSWIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - crosswind
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - aborted
  - object - runway light
  - aborted landing - performed, pilot in command

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE PILOT STATED THAT HE PERFORMED A GO-AROUND ON HIS FIRST APPROACH TO THE RUNWAY, AND CAME BACK FOR A SECOND ATTEMPT. HE REPORTED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG CROSSWIND, AND THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO SINK AS THEY CAME IN OVER TREES ON FINAL APPROACH. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN AND VEERED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, STRIKING A RUNWAY LIGHT. THE PILOT ADDED FULL POWER AND ABORTED THE LANDING; HE RETURNED TO THE DEPARTURE AIRPORT AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE PILOT HAD 61 HOURS TOTAL FLIGHT TIME, INCLUDING ABOUT 5 HOURS IN THE ACCIDENT MAKE AND MODEL AIRCRAFT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900712046199A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900712046199A), Jul 12, 1990: Piper PA28161, Pulaski, WI, Substantial damage. Pilot reported wind gust forced him off runway striking runway light continued flight to home base with damage.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
